TOMORROW
An open counsel to the youth
I say no to this phrase, we youths have been called leaders
of tomorrow every single day where and when is the tomorrow coming, I disagree
to this phrase after all the youth are the majority in the country, why
can’t we be the leaders of today?
The youths are the labour force of the country, The youths
are the one who determines the infrastructure and development of any country
today.
I am not yet calling
for a protest but am now calling for a revolutionary and total overhaul of the
Nigerian electoral system.
In Australia the minimum age for seeking office is 18 years,
in 2010 Waywott Rot was elected in house of representative.
In Canada the minimum age to run for public office is 18 years.
And for Denmark is 18 years
France 18 years, Germany 18 years, Israel 21 years, Iran 21
years.
And even the world super power US has 35 years as legitimacy
to run for president.
Note if you are
between the ages of eighteen (18) to age thirty-five (35) then then you are a
Nigerian youth.
Now who says the youths are just too naive? Where are those
who say the youths are inexperienced and novice, are we any different or better
than other nations abroad?
Who are those in government offices stealing our money, and
taking them to another man’s land are they the youths?
The former British Prime Minister David Cameron said “if
the same amount of money stolen from Nigeria for the last thirty years was
stolen in the UK we would have seized to exist”
The last time Nigeria had a youth as a key office holder was
in 1953 when Mathew Tawo Mbu of cross-river was appointed as the Federal
minister of labour at age 23, even at then some elders were still against him
but Nigerians could testify then that his service was a success.
Kim Jong Un of North Korea became supreme leader at 27 and North-Korea
is still developing and progressing and even more advanced in technology as
compared to Nigeria.
With all our Elders and Fathers in the government we are yet
to see what they have done if not causing crises and looting public funds buying
unnecessary jewelleries owning cars and assets, building hotels and houses
abroad, One in the past boldly came out and said stealing is not corruption.
Then I pose this question what kind of
leaders are we having in Nigeria.
If not for the current president, Muhammadu Buhari who is
now trying to save their neck, but we all know there are shameless others who
can never change their ways, after all a saying goes when you try to fight
corruption, corruption fights right back at you.
Yet I wonder with all this stolen funds all they seem to
develop in is pot-belly and plump-chicks they don’t even look healthier than
you or i, some even fall terminally ill and so on.
Well greed has no limits, and they would continue to
deteriorate if they don’t desist. Now since the inception of independence where
are we, have we moved forward or backward, everyday are we going a step forward
and two backward?
I don’t know what your answers are but look around you have
we really progressed?, have we really achieved?, Can we compete with the world?
Are we free or still in shackles by our own leaders and elders?
Youths the time has come, it is time we get prepared and
our voice and actions be heard.
